doll cradle makeover

June 14, 2010 by Lindsey 4 Comments

Well now, after I’ve taken about a 4 week vacation from posting I’m back at it with some fun projects and tidbits. Thanks for being patient!

My friend Isabel found this adorable doll cradle curbside a few months ago. It was a very soft wood so there were quite a few dings and scratches on it, not to mention the great drawing in sharpie. I started by filling in some of the imperfections with wood filler. Let that dry, then sanded the whole thing so it was nice and smooth.

I used some leftover purple paint that I had and coated it with two layers, and a third just to cover the sharpie drawing. The wood was veryyyyy soft so it absorbed a lot of paint. Because of that I allowed a good four days for it to dry to be sure it was completely dry.

I then used a bit of leftover fabric and batting to craft a simple, no-sew cushion. I mean c’mon, we wouldn’t want the doll to be uncomfortable. I wrapped the batting in the fabric and then used fabric glue to seal the whole thing up.

Not bad for a completely free and recycled project. Isabel delivered the cradle to her friend, whose daughter will soon get to play with it, and she loved it. It was definitely a fun project to work on especially because there was some meaning behind it. Have to also give a shout out to Al, who generously helped me paint when I was whining.
